Similar to a social security number in the USA, India has established a 12-digit unique identity for every Indian individual, including children and infants. This allows a methodology to identify every resident Indian with a unique number based on demographic and biometric data. The Aadhaar card is only for proof of identity and residence, not of citizenship or the person's date of birth.
How do NRIs or OCI holders get an Aadhaar card?
There are 2 ways, you can use your cell phone or your laptop/computer. mAadhaar is a mobile based application for smartphones (you can find it under your applications tab) or go to MyAadhaar, a login based portal. Use either one to begin the application process.
Do have the relevant documents ready, the list is long - Indian cell phone number (you can use a non-Indian mobile number but you won't receive any texts, etc...), Proof of Identity (PoI), Proof of Address (PoA), Proof of Relationship (PoR) and Proof of Date of Birth(PDB). The card is free of cost and you can obtain it on your next visit to Indian by going to an Aadhaar Kendra office (with the necessary documents).
Can NRIs get an Aadhaar card?
Yes, NRIs are eligible for Aadhaar cards as long as they hold an (required) Indian Passport. Many banks, telecom service providers, Income Tax departments, etc...mandate that you must have an Aadhaar card. Do review the other list of relevant documents that may be needed to support your identity.
Can OCI holders get an Aadhaar card?
Yes, OCI holders who live in India over 182 days in a year and have an Indian address can apply for the Aadhaar card. Follow the steps listed above.
